Editorial team — MT5 testing experience

"We installed XM MT5 on Windows 11 and macOS Sonoma in May 2026. The Windows version installed in 2 minutes 48 seconds. The built-in economic calendar loaded market events for the next 7 days within 10 seconds of first launch — no browser tab needed. The depth of market panel for EUR/USD showed 5 levels of bid/ask during the London session. Notably, the MT5 backtest engine was significantly faster than MT4 on the same machine — multi-currency, multi-timeframe strategy tests that took 18 minutes on MT4 completed in 11 minutes on MT5."

How to Login to XM MT5 — Step-by-Step

The MT5 login process is identical to MT4. You need your account number, MT5 password, and XM server name — all in the welcome email sent after email verification. Note that MT4 and MT5 account credentials are separate; an MT4 account cannot be used to log in to MT5.

1

Open MT5 and Go to File → Login to Trade Account

Launch MetaTrader 5 after installation. In the top menu, click File → Login to Trade Account. The login dialog opens.

2

Enter Your XM Account Number and MT5 Password

Enter your XM account number (7–9 digit number) in the Login field. Enter your MT5 password in the Password field. Both are in your XM welcome email — search "XM welcome" in your inbox.

⚠ MT4 and MT5 accounts are separate

If you registered your XM account on MT4, that account number and password will not work in MT5 — you need to open a new MT5 account from your Members Area. Log in to Members Area → Open New Account → choose MT5 as the platform.

3

Select Your XM MT5 Server

Type the first letters of your server in the Server field — for most XM global entity accounts it is XMGlobal-Real (live) or XMGlobal-Demo. Select from the dropdown. If you are under the EU CySEC entity it will be XMTrading-Real of XMTrading-Demo.

4

Click Login — Account Loads Within 10 Seconds

Click Login. The status bar at the bottom of MT5 shows your balance and a green connection indicator within 5–10 seconds. If login fails, verify the server name in your Members Area under My Accounts. The most common MT5 login error is using MT4 credentials in MT5 — check that your account was created on MT5.

XM MT5 Exclusive Features — What MT4 Cannot Do

MT5 was built to expand on MT4's capabilities. These are the features that exist only on MT5 and that are relevant to XM traders in 2026.

📅
MT5 Only

Built-in Economic Calendar

View → Economic Calendar displays upcoming data releases with impact rating, forecast, previous, and actual values — updated live. No separate browser tab or third-party calendar needed.

📊
MT5 Only

21 Chart Timeframes

MT5 adds M2, M3, M4, M6, M10, M12, M20, H2, H3, H6, H8, H12 to the standard set. Scalpers benefit from M2/M3; swing traders from H6/H12.

📖
MT5 Only

Depth of Market (Level 2)

View bid/ask liquidity at 5+ price levels for any instrument during trading hours. Useful for identifying large order clusters and planning entries around them.

2 Additional Pending Order Types

MT5 adds Buy Stop Limit en Sell Stop Limit — contingent orders that combine stop and limit mechanics. Useful for breakout strategies that require price confirmation before entry.

📈

Faster Backtesting Engine

MT5's multi-threaded backtesting runs significantly faster than MT4 — particularly for multi-currency or multi-timeframe strategies. Our testing showed a 35–40% time reduction on the same hardware.

🏭

Stock CFD Access

MT5 provides broader access to individual stock CFDs (US, UK, German companies) alongside forex and gold. The XM Shares Account (direct stock trading, $10,000 minimum) is available only on MT5.

✓ Which Should You Choose?

Choose MT5 if: you want the built-in economic calendar, more timeframes for scalping, access to stock CFDs, or faster EA backtesting. MT5 is the better platform for multi-asset traders and those who want professional-grade market analysis tools.

Choose MT4 if: you are primarily a forex trader, you already have MT4 EAs you rely on, or you want the simplest possible interface. The MQL4 community is much larger — there are more free EAs and indicators available for MT4 than MT5. See our full XM MT4 download guide.

Frequently Asked Questions — XM MT5 Download & Setup 2026

Click the Download button on this page to go to the XM Members Area MT5 download section. Choose your operating system — Windows (~16MB installer), Mac (via App Store), iOS (App Store), or Android (Google Play). Installation takes 2–3 minutes on desktop. After installation, log in using your XM MT5 account number, password, and server name from your welcome email.
No. MT4 and MT5 accounts are completely separate on XM. If your account was created on MT4, you cannot log in to MT5 with those credentials. To use MT5, log in to your XM Members Area → Open New Account → select MT5 as the platform. You can run both MT4 and MT5 accounts simultaneously from the same Members Area. See our XM MT4 download guide if you need MT4 instead.
Yes. MT5 includes a built-in economic calendar accessible from View → Economic Calendar. It shows upcoming data releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC, central bank decisions, etc.) with their impact level, forecast, previous reading, and actual value updated in real time. This is one of MT5's key advantages over MT4, which requires a separate browser window for news tracking.
No. MT4 EAs (.ex4/.mq4 files) are not compatible with MT5. MT5 uses MQL5 language and .ex5/.mq5 files. You need to find MT5-compatible versions of your EAs at the MQL5 community marketplace, or hire a developer to rewrite them. Some EA developers offer both MT4 and MT5 versions — check with the EA provider first.
XM MT5 has 21 timeframes: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M10, M12, M15, M20, M30, H1, H2, H3, H4, H6, H8, H12, D1, W1, and MN. MT4 only has 9 (M1, M5, M15, M30, H1, H4, D1, W1, MN). The extra intermediate timeframes in MT5 are particularly useful for scalpers who need finer price granularity than M5 or M15 offers.
Yes. MT5 is completely free to download and use with any XM account. There are no platform fees — trading costs are only the spread (and commission on Zero accounts) per trade. A free demo account with $100,000 in virtual funds is available without any deposit. See our XM demo rekening gids to set up a free MT5 demo today.
Choose MT5 if you want the built-in economic calendar, 21 timeframes, stock CFD access, or faster backtesting. Choose MT4 if you are forex-focused, rely on existing MT4 EAs, or want a simpler interface with a larger EA community. You can open both an MT4 and MT5 account simultaneously from the same XM Members Area — there is no obligation to choose just one. See our detailed XM MT4 download guide for the full MT4 setup process.
